How did the working class go from salt of the earth to scum of the earth? When ‘chav’first appeared in the Collins English Dictionary in 2005, it was defined as ‘a young working class person who dresses in casual sports clothing’. Since then, its meaning has broadened to encompass any negative traits associated with working class people, including violence, laziness, teenage pregnancies, racism and drunkenness. Author Owen Jones discusses his new book CHAV: The Demonisation of the Working Class with Stoke Newington resident and Guardian columnist Suzanne Moore, chaired by Little Atoms radio show’s Neil Denny.
